COURSE OUTLINE Computer Science GCSE
Exam Board: OCR
This course has been developed to provide students with a real understanding of how computers work ‘behind the scenes. As part of the course, students will, through the study of computer programming, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are invaluable in both education and the world of work.
Component 01 – Computer Systems (50% of total mark) - Examined 1 hr 30mins:
A written examination that covers the theory about computer architecture and networking including security features and legal issues. This exam is taken at the end of Year 11.
Component 02 – Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming. (50% of total mark)- Examined 1 hr 30mins:
This is a written exam, focused on computational thinking and algorithms. Students will be tested on the elements of computational thinking and logic. You will be assessed on your ability to write, correct and improve algorithms
Students will be challenged by a range of exciting and engaging tasks to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned. This is a practical part of the course where students develop their problem solving, design and programming skills and apply these to real-world problems.
The qualification will also provide a good grounding for other subject areas that require computational thinking and analytical skills

This course helps to prepare students for higher study and employment in the field of computer science and will provide students with a solid foundation both in technology and problem-solving skills; it will also provide a good grounding for other subject areas that require computational thinking and analytical skills. Exam Board: OCR
This course in IT will inspire and equip students with the confidence to use skills that are relevant to the IT sector and more widely. It covers the use of IT in the digital world, Internet of Everything, data manipulation, human-computer interface (HCI) and augmented reality.
This qualification results will be graded on a 7-grade scale with Pass, Merit and Distinction at both levels 1 and 2 and a new grading of Distinction* at Level 2. These grades are equivalent to GCSEs.
This qualification consists of 3 units.

R050: IT in the digital world
R050: IT in the digital world This is assessed by taking an exam. In this unit you will learn about design and testing concepts for creating an IT solution or product, and the uses of IT in the digital world. Topics include: Design Tools, Human Computer Interface (HCI) in everyday life, Data and testing, Cyber-security and legislation, Digital Communications, Internet of Everything (IoE).
R060: Data manipulation using spreadsheets
This is assessed by completing a set assignment. In this unit you will learn how to plan, design, create, test and evaluate a data manipulation spreadsheet solution to meet client’s requirements. You will be able to evaluate your solution based on the user requirements. Topics include: Planning and designing the spreadsheet solution, Creating the spreadsheet solution, Testing the spreadsheet solution, Evaluating the spreadsheet solution.
R070: Using Augmented Reality to present information
This is assessed by completing a set assignment. In this unit you will learn how to design, create, test and review an Augmented Reality model prototype to meet a client’s requirements. Topics include: Augmented Reality (AR), Designing an Augmented Reality (AR) model prototype, Creating an Augmented Reality (AR) model prototype, Testing and reviewing.
