Exam Board: AQA
The course covers three broad topic areas of:
- Identity and culture
- Local, National, International and Global Areas of interest
- Current and future study and employment
Knowledge of vocabulary and grammar underpins all 4 skill areas.
Listening, reading, speaking and writing will all be assessed by external examination at the end of two years and are each worth 25% of the total mark.
Extra Curriculum Experience:
There will be a 3-day visit to Paris in Year 10 to give students exposure to the French language.
Further Studies and Careers
People with language skills are highly thought of and knowledge of French can prove invaluable in a wide range of careers. The study of a Modern Foreign Language enriches travel abroad and enhances opportunities to work abroad or with an international company. The decline in numbers of pupils studying a modern foreign language to GCSE throughout the country will make knowledge of modern languages even more desirable.
Paper 1: Listening- 25% of GCSE (Externally assessed)
- Foundation paper: 35 min written paper, 40 marks.
- Higher paper: 45 min written paper, 50 marks
Paper 2: Speaking- 25% of GCSE (Externally assessed)
Non-exam assessment, Controlled assessment.
- Foundation paper: 7–9 minutes + preparation time
- Higher paper: 10–12 minutes + preparation time Foundation 60 marks – Higher 72 marks
Paper 3- Reading- 25% of GCSE (Externally assessed)
- Foundation paper: 45 min written paper, 60 marks.
- Higher paper: 60 min written paper, 60 marks
Paper 4: Writing- 25% of GCSE (Externally assessed)
- Foundation paper: 60 min written paper, 50 marks
- Higher paper: 1 hour 15 min written paper, 60 marks
