Introduction to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1.

Year 1 is a very important year for our children as it is their transition from foundation stage to key stage 1. We aim to make this as enjoyable and easy as possible for all. We enable this through a broad and stimulating curriculum with the aim that the children are happy, independent learners who are kind, respectful and considerate of their peers.

During the year, we look at a range of fascinating texts in English including the fantasy stories: Where the Wild Things Are, The Robot and the Bluebird and Beegu. We follow the White Rose scheme of learning in Maths.

We will travel back in time to explore the amazing lives of the famous fossil hunter, Mary Anning, and that of past and present day naturalist, David Attenborough.

To enhance the children’s learning experiences, we make use of our wonderful school grounds and also endeavour to make several educational visits throughout the year.

Learning at Home:

We know children try their best within school and home should be for family time and recreational activities. However, we do ask parents to help with phonics, spelling and reading.

Within Year 1 phonics learning sheets will be sent home weekly. It is important that your child is reviewing these regularly at home with your support. Weekly spelling will be set alongside phonics. We ask for you to practise them together at home in a way that best suits your child and helps them to retain them.

Pupils will have a new reading book weekly, please read with them, remember to discuss the text as you are reading, for example asking them who the characters and what emotions it may show. Please ensure that your child has their school reading book and reading record in school daily.

During the Summer term, Year 1 pupils have to undertake a statutory Phonics Screening Check.
